Insurance company demands disabled send wheelchair in before they will repair it

WLTX.com reports that a woman that was involved in a traffic accident with her wheelchair is having problems with the driver’s insurance company. The woman was moving in her wheelchair with her service dog in a crosswalk. It was then that a car drove and struck her, knocking the wheelchair five feet into oncoming traffic. Bistanders helped her get out of the road and back into her wheelchair, but the chair was damaged. The insurance company was sent several repair quotes but the insurance company is not willing to repair the wheelchair unless it is shipped to them for verification. If the disabled woman were to do this, she would have no way of getting out of bed or do her life activities since she cannot walk. The insurance company has said that it is refusing to pay for any repairs on the wheelchair unless their home office can look kit over.

This is an obvious scare tactic so the insurance company doesn’t have to pay. If you are in an automobile accident, you get a quote from your garage and send it in. The insurance company writes a check to the shop and you get your car fixed. No insurance company demands that you send your car to Canada because that is where the headquarters is because they need to verify the damage. What makes anyone think that the people at headquarters are experts in wheelchair repair? This isn’t even counting how does this woman get around while the insurance company holds her wheelchair hostage? What guarantee does the victim have that the wheelchair will be fixed properly and using original parts from the manufacture? This underscores that you should always have a lawyer for accident ralated iktems in case things spin out of control (like this). Companies won’t listen to a victim but they sure will listen to a lawyer that can cost them a lot of money in court.
