President Obama lays an egg
There have been numerous news articles reporting on the horrible behavior of our president on the Tonight Show. On the show, the president compared his bad bowling score to that of someone in the Special Olympics. Of course there was tremendous laughing on the show and everyone thought that it was funny and proper to compare the disabled to something that was useless and broken. Several disabled bloggers have written excellent articles flaming the president for his despicable behavior and have asked for a formal apology. The best we have received is a halt-hearted apology from the White House. No formal written apology as the president moves on to other things. But the flamage is continuing with more and more newspapers and magazines taking the president to task over his horrible behavior and asking to explain himself.
The disabled need to decide how to best deal with this problem. The behavior of the president has a large influence on the rest of the country. If it is ok for President Obama to make fun of the disabled, then it must be ok for the rest of America to do it. The first thing we should do is write a letter of concern to the President and to the congress. Everyone must realize that the ADA was created for a reason and anyth9ing done to diminish it’s effectiveness would be a disaster. No one is going to stand up for us except ourselves. We demand to be treated as others would like to be treated. The disabled are not second class citizens, and we are not some broken toy to be thrown away because it is of no further use. These are our lives that they are playing with and it is time to show America that we work and contribute just as much as the able bodied in this country.
We are fighting the same problems of segregation and other problems that the African Americans did in the 1950’s and 1960’s. If we do not demand our civil rights then no one will give them back to us. Don’t be surprised that you are asked to sit in the back of the bus or refused to be allowed to live in an apartment or neighborhood because they don’t want out “kind” around. It is bigotry pure and simple and we are not going to put up with it any more.
