Woman doesn’t let disability stop her dream
The News-Record has a story about a young woman that had a aneurysm in her spine which turned her into a paraplegic when she was a teenager. She decided to teach and finished her bachelor degree. After running into several school systems that did not want a disabled teacher in the classroom, she found one that saw her for her gifts and expertise. This young lady now teaches second and third graders for a local school system. The school system was not sure if she could do everything without an assistant., but they soon found out that this teacher could do everything an able bodied teacher could do.
It is sad that there are still many employers that have negative connotations of the disabled. Somehow we are stupid or incapable of even taking care of ourselves. While severely disabled quadriplegics may need help to do daily tasks, most paraplegics can do almost anything with little or no help. Getting into a car and driving somewhere is a simple task and most work is done sitting anyway. I ran into two companies that did not want a disabled person going in front of customers. One said that it "sent the wrong message on the type of company we are". Whatever that meant. Anyway, this article just proves that we can do anything that anyone else can do.
