Service dog unwanted at university
DailyLobo.com reports that a woman going to a local university brought her service dog with her to class. The service dog then sniffed the bag of the student in front of her and the student grabbed a book and made a threatening gesture that he was going to hit the dog. There was no instructor in the room at the time so there was no one to lodge a complaint to. The woman picked up her things and then reported the problem to the university. The university does very little in actually accommodating the students, instead each student has to talk to individual professors to see what changes they are willing to make for a specific student. It is rather harsh that the university does not work with the professors to see that can be done for disabled students. Obviously much more would be done if it came down from management rather than a student that is asking for help.
Many of us with service dogs have problems with companies, stores, and restaurants that don’t want us around. Tough. The ADA clearly states that our service dogs can go anywhere we go and there is no rule they can make to change it. Employee afraid of animals, get another employee to help. Someone allergic, then move the disabled person to another area. In this case it did not say if the dog had it’s cape and coat on that showed it was a service dog and on duty. Just bringing in the dog could definitely cause grief and is a good warning to owners to make sure their dogs are always clearly clothed to show their status. Even with clothing to show they are service dogs won’t stop idiots from trying to take away your civil rights, but it makes it much harder. Note that if you have problems with a business, show them the law (always carry it on your service animal) so the understand what they must do. If that doesn’t work call the police and file a report. That report can be used to sue the establishment under ADA guidelines. It’s a bummer to do this, but we are fighting for our rights and the only way to do that is through information, and if need be, the court system.
Once businesses get hit with a couple of expensive lawsuits, they will think twice before they try to throw out a disabled person be4cause they are in a wheelchair or have a service animal with them.
