Team regrows fine motor skill neurons
Forbes.com is reporting on a team that has been able to recreate neurons that control fine motor skills. Up to this time gross motor skills have had success in reproduction and growth, but this is the first that has grown and partially moved into the spinal column. While this particular study was not able to get the fine motor neurons to grow deep into the spinal cord to hook up to other cells, it is a first step in understanding how the process works. Scientists working on this project agreed that much work needs to be put into this procedure before it would be useful to humans, but it is a large step forward. The more that is understood about the structures of the spine and how the interact between muscles and brain cells, the better chance that we will have a successful procedure that will work across a large group of patients.
While this procedure cannot help us know, it is good to see that forward movement is being seen in the pure research aspect of regrowing neuron cells. There are no quick fixes to spinal cord injuries, or to the problems that are created from damage to the spinal cord. Scientists are findi8ng out that the spinal cord is much more complicated then the originally thought and that time and research are needed to fully understand what we are up against before any type of healing procedure can be created. There are many people that are putting their hopes in injections of fetal cells and those folks usually only end up in pain and cancerous cells where the injections are made. The best thing any of us can do is wait and see on new procedures. Turning one self into a lab rat for researchers in foreign countries does not make sense because they do not understand what they are doing or what the results can be.
The last thing anyone wants to do is make the problem worse, but some folks want to believe anything in hopes they can walk again. Don’t fall for expensive unproven techniques that are not available in western hospitals. There is a reason these procedures are not available in Europe, Canada, or the US — it is because they are not safe or shown to be effective. Save your money, or give it to groups like the Christopher Reeves foundation which will funnel it to researchers that are working on a real cure, not a pipe dream.

Alex;
We like to put in at least one article a day. However, if it is a slow news day or if I’m sick or am experiencing a pain attack, then things may not be updated for several days. Stay tuned and you should see new articles with days of the latest posting.
Hope that helps.
