Study shows chronic pain is treatable with acupuncture
A group of 638 people that complained to have chronic back pain were split into two different groups. The first group was given acupuncture treatment at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and finally for the year. The second group was given pokes in the arm with a toothpick and told that it was a treatment for pain. Both were found to have positive returns on the amount of pain a person was feeling. However, the acupuncture patients found that they had less pain for a longer amount of time. The researchers that released this study said that they do not understand how acupuncture works, even after looking at the patients with different techniques. It was felt that the placebo effect was working here, but the numbers prove that acupuncture indeed helps with chronic back pain. (Source: Timesonline.co.uk)
It is funny to watch western medicine doctors scratch their heads when it comes to eastern medicine methods like acupuncture or chiropractic. They say over and over that eastern medicine does not work or they don’t understand how it works and then say it is a placebo effect. The same could be said of pills that have not been proven to do much of anything, but they are handed out constantly. Each branch of medicine has it’s place in helping patients and should be carefully done depending on what the patient needs. Chronic pain is something that western medicine does not understand well, and most doctors just keep handing out more powerful pain killers without understanding the root cause of the pain. Many times eastern medicine can find the problem and help to bring relief to the patient.
In the end the job of the doctors is to relieve pain and help the lifestyle of the patient. Who cares how something works as long as it is effective. Other doctors can spend time trying to figure out why something like acupuncture work. In the mean time lets get it out there to as many people as possible so they can get relief. Something that was not discussed in the report was the reduction of pain pills when acupuncture was used. That could be a real savings to governments trying to save money on socialized medicine systems. If acupuncture or chiropractic works to relieve pain and reduce drug use, then lets implement it. We can save monjey and patients have a better life – everyone wins.
