Disabled losing dental coverage

In Florida, The Agency for Persons with Disabilities is charged to provide the disability community with as many services as possible. To pay for the services there are different levels or tiers that the disabled are placed in based on the services they used the year before. Because of the increasing number of people asking for help and the decreasing funding available to states and money from the federal government, the disabled are being forced to accept what is called Tier 4. At this level the total amount available to the disabled is $14,792. If they accept this, and many have no choice because they have already used up the money from the previous tiers. One of the stipulations of tier 4 is the dropping of dental coverage to the person. If the person had dental coverage or picked it amoung things that they wanted covered, they find that dental covereage is no longer an option. Those with dental problems that picked dental coverage now find that they must pay for all dental work. This becomes more of an issue if the person is on SSDI and cannot afford dental work and still pay their bills. If you live in Florida and are disabled or use this program please call your congressmen to let them know the problems and concerns that you have. (Source: Waiverprovider.com)

We can appreciate that states are in the inenviable situation of paying for services while receiving less from taxpayers as more peoploe find themselves unemployed. However, if the problem is approaching critical, contact the federal government and ask for help. Taking away civil programs that let people live healthy and safe lives is a stupid thing to do. Forcing the sadibled to get help in help in hospitals instead of doctor’s offices is very expensive. Plus since the same doctor never sees the patient in the emergency room, no real standard of care is provided because everyone gets to start over again. It makes no sense to spend a lot more money on the same service or less service because the first cannot be funded properly. Like the old saying, "there is never time to do it right, but there is always time to do it over" fits well in this situation. Except we are taking about people and not widgets and those peoople have lives that deserve to be the best that can be lived. That is not going to happen if people are sick and never get well. What kind of quality of life exists if the person is in constant excruciating pain? Everyone deserves better, especially those that have already paid their dues and are just looking for help.
