Medicare recipients already dropped

For those that have not followed all the reports on the new medical bill making it’s way through the Senate, Medicare recipients are losing doctors, hospitals, and general care right now. My doctors have to be careful which medications that the prescribe because many times the company paid by Medicare will not OK the drug. This is markedly different from standard insurance policies where you go in, talk to the doctor, and get your prescription all without  having to beat up the insurance company or fill out all kinds of crazy reports explaining why you need the drug. This of course assumes that you can even get a doctor to see you. Many of us on Medicare are finding out that doctors will simply not see you anymore. Continued…

Ireland: Handicapped parking crackdown

The Irish government is finally working on increasing the penalties for parking in a handicapped parking spot. Presently drivers only have to pay 80 Euros for parking in a handicapped spot, assuming that most police don’t write parking tickets for this because of the low penalty and no points against the driver. If the changes are made the driver of the vehicle would be hit with points on their record. Parking rates can be high in cities to the point that it may be cheaper to park in a handicapped spot than in paying for a regular spot. Continued…

FDA approves embryonic cellular procedure

The FDA has approved the first human treatment using embryonic stem cells. The procedure only gave permission to test the cells in patients with thoracic spinal cord damage. This type of damage occurs below the neck and usually creates a situation where the person has use of their arms and hands, but nothing below the middle of their chest. Changing drugs can increase their effectiveness

As we move up the ladder of drugs to ever more powerful pills we need to make sure we use them wisely. It is easy for pain doctors to keep writing prescriptions to the same pain killers that work for you over time. Enzyme found to help formation of new axons

Researchers at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology have announced that they have found an enzyme that helps nerves to grow inn areas that have been damaged after trauma. In typical injuries scar tissue forms around the damage point and the body removes the tissue so that new muscle and nerves can grow in the area that was damaged. In spinal cord injuries the scar tissue forms and that is the end of the story. Special chemicals form that stop the body’s cells from moving in and removing the scar tissue and then allowing the healing process to start. Continued…

H1N1 kills paraplegic man in Greece

A paraplegic man that was suffering from liver problems died from complications brought on by the H1N1 virus. He was brought into the hospital with a high fever and was placed in intensive care. Unfortunately the virus quickly spread to his other organs which began to shut down. Doctors were not able to get control of the virus using anti-virus drugs before he died. Continued…

Hobby Lobby loses ADA lawsuit

Hob-Lob Inc, better known as Hobby Lobby a gift and craft store chain has lost a major ADA lawsuit. The case started when a worker was injured and could no longer use a ladder in their job. Rather than finding a job that the worker could do within the company, Hobby Lobby decided to let the person go. This turned into an ADA discrimination case as the woman was considered disabled because her injury (ankle injury) forced her to use a wheelchair for mobility. Continued…

Insurance company dropping sickest from policies

In several states Guradian Insurance is dropping those people that are the sickest and as such are the most expensive to keep alive. Regardless of the policy or payment record, the insurance company has decided that these people are costing the company too much money and need to be dropped. One executive sent an email that called these customers "dogs" and that they could "get rid of" them to save the company money. Guardian has been very profitable this year, including paying out dividends of $723 million dollars. Continued…

Disabled losing dental coverage

In Florida, The Agency for Persons with Disabilities is charged to provide the disability community with as many services as possible. To pay for the services there are different levels or tiers that the disabled are placed in based on the services they used the year before. Because of the increasing number of people asking for help and the decreasing funding available to states and money from the federal government, the disabled are being forced to accept what is called Tier 4. At this level the total amount available to the disabled is $14,792. Continued…

New Internet based study on CRPS looking for participants

The Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association is looking for participants in a new study of CRPS. You must have a diagnosis of either Type I or Type II to enter into this study. Note that this is an Internet study and not the traditional one where you go to a doctor or study center and tests are performed on you. Instead questions will be sent to you either through email or web. If you do not feel comfortable with doing a study in this way you can contact the study’s Project Manager to obtain paper documentation and forms to be filled out. Continued…
